The challenges facing the NHS have been commented on by many observers and practitioners. It is encouraging to see a statement that there will be a 'wholesale shift' in NHS funding rules. The detail of this will be important and we will need to wait until later in the year to see the detail.

Many of the disincentives of the current arrangements appear to be up for discussion with the quote on system control totals 'there's a shared recognition that the regime needs to evolve'. There is also a really important reflection that the NHS needs to be more radical about getting more health value out of the service. Whilst we need to wait to see the detail, the discussion itself sends a message that perhaps, maybe this time there will be wholescale service change.
